Indie MEGABOOTH at PAX East

By Graham Smith April 2nd, 2012, under News

PAX East is fast approaching, and we’re finally able to share the details of the incredible Indie MEGABOOTH with everyone.

16 great indie developers have banded together to take a large piece of the show floor and overwhelm you with 20 games (including Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack and Guacamelee!).

Also, as part of the fun, the developers have created a bizarre scavenger hunt called the Indie MEGA Passport which will give you a chance to win a very exclusive collectible button!

DrinkBox on The Electric Playground at First Person Show

By Graham Smith November 11th, 2011, under News

Hey guys. DrinkBox recently attended the Digifest First Person Show with playable versions of Mutant Blobs Attack and Guacamelee. Megashaun and Darcy from The Electric Playground were there filming, and the footage can now be viewed online here:

They were kind enough to edit out most of my awkward pauses.

In addition to clips of Guacamelee and Mutant Blobs Attack,  you can see clips from other great Toronto games such as They Bleed Pixels  (with music by Megashaun) and Sissy’s Magical Ponycorn Adventure!

The video of the whole episode can be viewed below. Our part starts about 18:30 in.

DrinkBox Enters the IGF with 2 Games!

By Graham Smith October 27th, 2011, under News

Hi everyone!

In case you missed it, the IGF entries were announced earlier this week, and DrinkBox has entered two games this year: Mutant Blobs Attack and Guacamelee! There were a record breaking number of entries this year (570!).

Some titles we are particularly excited about from friends of DrinkBox:

Chasing Aurora by Broken Rules is an awesome new game which we got a chance to play at PAX earlier this year. Super fun competitive multiplayer.

Go Home Dinosaurs by Fire Hose Games, a very cool tower defense style game from the makers of Slam Bolt Scrappers which we were also fortunate enough to try at PAX this year.

The already released I Have 1 Day, Villainous, and the upcoming Bullet Audyssey from Cellar Door Games are all fantastic games. Teddy Lee, one of the designers at DrinkBox, worked on these.

Retro/Grade by 24 Caret Games, our neighbours at PAX, are trying to get players to dust off their old Guitar Controllers for this new rhythm / shooter game.

The playable  Sissy’s Magical Ponycorn Adventure by Untold Entertainment, made in a weekend at a Toronto game jam, has captured our hearts.

Super T.I.M.E. Force by Capy is a mysterious new title from our Toronto neighbours that has a very cool art style, and allows players go back in time and mess with history to “make the world a better place for you and me”.

They Bleed Pixels by Spooky Squid Games and music from DJ Finish Him (aka Shaun Hatton) is a bloody action platformer with an awesome pixel art style.

And last but not least, Yeti (downloadable and playable from that link) by Metanet Software (of N and N+ fame) is an adventure game where you indirectly manipulate a Yeti, taking it out of it’s natural habitat and putting it into the bizarre world of humans.

Good luck to everyone!

New DrinkBox Game Announced–Guacamelee!

By Graham Smith October 18th, 2011, under News

Hi all, Graham here.

I’m excited to finally unveil the new game DrinkBox Studios has been working on: Guacamelee!

Announce Trailer

Guacamelee! features a down on his luck Mexican named Juan Aguacate, who sets out to save the world when El Presidente’s Daughter is kidnapped by an Evil Charro Skeleton. The story takes place in and around a small village in Mexico, and has the player travelling through alternate dimensions including “The World of the Dead” and “The World of Nightmares” on his quest to rescue the girl he loves.

The game draws its inspiration from traditional Mexican culture and folklore, and features many interesting and unique characters.

With this title, we’re looking to build upon the classic open-world, Metroid-vania style of games by adding a strong melee combat component, a new dimension switching mechanic, and co-operative same-screen multiplayer for the entire story. We are also attempting to blur the boundaries between combat and platforming by making many of the moves you perform useful for both of these.

The project is currently being developed with financial participation from the Canada Media Fund. Platforms and release dates are TBD.

A playable version of the game will be shown at Digifest’s First Person Show in Toronto on October 30th. We love having people play test the game, so if you are in the area, do make sure to drop by. It’s Free!
